Are you aware that over 80% of identifying LGBTQI+ people have or in the past have had mental health concerns? This figure is staggering. There are many contributory possible reasons for this statistic, which as a community and as individuals we need to address. Yoga in its essence can be a wonderful therapeutic tool to support our physical and mental wellbeing and allow us to feel part of a community.
Why Join a LGBT+ Yoga Class?
Many people within our community really struggle to feel at home in public classes for a multitude of reasons. Anything from gender specific instructions, past experiences of changing areas, toilet facilities, appropriate clothing choices to inappropriate use of language can be reasons stopping us from stepping through the door.
You will be welcomed into our safe and inclusive space to practice Yoga with like minded individuals. The event is hosted by Yoga and Wellbeing teachers from the local LGBT community.
All we ask is you respect the safe space we have created for those you are sharing it with.
What Should You expect?
Each session will last for 90 minutes in total, with 60 minutes of gentle movement and breathing which will be accessible to anyone as the practice can be done on a chair or on a mat. This is followed by 10 minutes of led reflection and 20 minutes to share experiences, laugh and commune with one another.
There is no experience needed in yoga, no requirements to be fit or to be able to touch your toes. There is definitely no upward age limit (16 year-olds and under should be accompanied by an appropriate adult). Should you have any medical conditions or illnesses please let the person running the session know.
- Sessions for 2019 all run from 11:00am to 12.30pm
- Dates: Sunday 28th July, 22nd September, 20th October and 24th November
- At Anahata Yoga Centre, 1033 London Road, Leigh on Sea, Essex, SS9 3JY
There is no cost to attend our LGBT Yoga Class, however, we would ask you make a donation on the day. Donations will be split between Southend Pride and Transpire, two amazing LGBT+ organisations based in Southend and helping to raise awareness of the needs of our community.
